Decans, More than Modifications of you Sun Sign!
I’ve been using decans, as a means of going deeper into the birth charts for a few decades. For those unfamiliar with this astrological teaching, decans are three astrological sub-ruler of each sign,each ruling 10 degrees. Most commonly they are seen as a type “modification” of the regular planetary ruler!
The first 10 degrees is always assigned to the signs traditional rulership. The second are the rulers of the next sign of the next sign of the same element! For example, in the case of Gemini, the first 10 degrees are ruled my mercury; the next 10 degrees are ruled by the planetary ruler of the next air sign, Libra, which happens to be Venus; and the last 10 degrees of the sign by ruler of the next air sign Aquarius, with is Saturn (Traditional Rulership are generally used) or Uranus.
I’ve found that to simply use decans as a ‘modifier’ is to miss out on the deeper esoteric meaning! The Origins of these subdivisions of signs we know as Decans or Decanates, originate from the ancient Egyptian decan wheel. This wheel contained the 36 constellations that symbolized the passing of time. Decans are truly part of our ancient esoteric wisdom, and can be traced back to ancient Egyptian decan wheel, which contains 36 constellations, each with it’s postive and negative or feminine and masculine dualistic expressions equaling a total of 72 expressions, and consequently qabbalistic Tree of Life, the 72 Divine Names of God, and the 72 Tarot Cards! As such they deserve more serious study!
The Movement to Measure Astral Energies
I’ve also explored various predominate elements in charts! In the early eighties when cosmodynes first came out as ” a more scientific way of measuring and determining the amount and kind of astral energy a native (person the chart represents) has at his disposal”.
I jumped on board with all my enthusiasm! I even created my own charts and graphs for my client for ready reference, and thought my list of hemispheres, quadrants, modalities, elements, predominating aspects, most to least aspect ed, and a few more was fairly complete! I’d even started looking at which harmonic was predominating, which I had not seen any other astrologer study!

What had not occurred to me was was to include Decans in my quest to measure out all the various energies in a chart! Given the information above, it seems this would be an ideal way to get a quick look at a personal more esoteric destiny and purpose!
Under the Law of Analogy, the three decanates of a sign relate to the three principle aspects of our esoteric being, or the triune being – Body, Soul and Spirit! As most of my astrology client can attest, as an esoteric astrologer, our first sessions usually start with an explanation of how the are come from the divine oneness as it’s unique spark, and how there chart is “the intention to incarnate” and discover their divinity?
Egyptian, Vedanta, Gnostic and Western Myst ism all speak As triune being consisting of a physical, emotional and mental body, and when these triple energy come together, it results in the appearance of a human soul on Earth.
This being said, the study of which of these energies predominate should provide vital clues and help point to the purpose of our incarnation! That said, it’s become a subject of personal study, for application in my astrological studies… even after 25 years of astrological study, I’m still learning the subject! It’s a true testament to the depth of true astrology!
In my sometimes obsessive nature, I’ll have to run through my collection of clients, public personalities, and do a more detailed study!
